After my first three years of running our online business I found that I was feeling a great deal of anxiety whenever we had low income days, months, and even hours. I’ve had very little experience running any kind of business and therefore I never understood the importance of tracking. In the last year I have been slowly moving toward tracking income and costs using an Excel workbook but Excel seemed like a complicated piece of software. After I caught on to creating Excel sheets I was surprised to see how easy it is. Anyway, once I had my spreadsheet completed I went looking for a way to run Excel online or on one of my websites.

I searched online for Php and Cgi scripts that would give me the ability to run Excel on my site. The search was long and tedious and I found a few sites that provided a way I could run Excel on their server and their site. The prices ranged greatly from a monthly fee of a few hundred dollars up to expensive setup costs as high as $15,000 USD. Obviously some of these web service providers are catering to larger companies with larger budgets than mine.

Eventually I came across the Beta program with Google which allows you to simply upload an Excel workbook and manage it going forward. I find that editing Excel workbooks online in my Google account is easier than editing Excel on my PC. There are some helpful buttons and applications for “Excel dummies”. Finding formulas is really easy with the drop down menu they provide.

Digg 3.0 is now in full swing and your humble narrator is using it everyday. You can too, and the benefits should speak for themselves. If you’ve never heard of Digg, or don’t know what it is, it’s a web service that allows you to freely submit links and references to your blog or web site articles. You can instantly see if other Digg members “Digg ya” or “Bury ya”.

Digg users can then give your story a thumbs up or thumbs down vote, which directly affects the readership your piece will receive. You can select which category your article will be viewed in, and once you click the submit button, your article starts at the top of your chosen category list. It won’t usually stay at the top for long, as new articles are added by other users frequently. If you have a piece that is of great interest to readers, you can see a massive boost in traffic to your blog or web site.

To get started and test Digg for yourself go and register at Digg.com. Once you have logged into your Digg account, click the submit a story link at the top/left of the page. Then enter the URL of web page where your article, video, picture, etc. lives. You want this to be the address of the article, or item, you have on your site.

Click continue and then enter the title and description of the piece. Then you will be asked to select an appropriate category for your piece. The Digg categories are as follows:

If your article or piece is something Digg users really take to, they will click the Digg button and prop your article up another notch. If they think your article is a waste of time, they click the thumbs down button, entitled “Bury Story”. With Digg 3.0, when you click the Bury Story button you are given a drop-down menu consisting of 5 choices.

Make sure you have a way to track your visitors coming to the page you submitted (Statcounter.com is free), because this is alot of fun. You can see visitors coming to your site via Digg immediately. One thing you’ll notice — it’s difficult to retain the interest of Digg users. For instance, my articles are concerned with online income, and the subject matter would only interest those who want to information on doing so.

Often, I notice that popular Digg submissions are videos and pictures. I saw an extremely popular Digg submission that featured the microscopic picture of Velcro pulling apart. It was indeed interesting to see that. Depending on your blog topic or subject matter, you could really swamp some traffic to your pages. For instance, if you have a photography web site, you could submit some interesting pics for Digg users. You could instantly see thousands of visitors hit your site in only a matter of a few hours.

The problem is that they were paying too much for monthly fees (in my opinion) and they were restricted in bandwidth, storage, and overall site design options. I noticed that my fellow netrepreneurs using these builders were dreadfully handicapped by the lack of templates to choose from. Most of the templates offered at the time embodied bloated code and a weak sense of bandwidth conservation. Nope….the whole option was a waste of time in my books. Until recently, I have seen nothing to change my strong opinion on this. The cynic in me is convinced that 95% of the original web site builder companies were self serving entities that took full advantage of the so-called “newbie”.

They promised this and that, telling their woeful prospects that they could “succeed online” and make BIG profits using their amazing builder. The reality is that without a massive amount of perseverance, the beginner is destined to be stuck with a monthly bill, and a dead web site floundering around in the Internet desert. As you can tell by reading this, I too have been duped by the odd unscrupulous Internet company – companies that gather the innocent, empty their wallets, and disappear underneath the cyber rock where they came from.

Last week I got an email from a buddy of mine who lives in the UK, and is one of my online business peers from way back. He wanted me to check out his new web site which he used a builder to create. I was surprised that he was still using web site builders, but I promised to take a look and give him my opinion. The first thing that surprised me was his Google page rank (6). The next thing that surprised me was his Alexa rating.

I ditched email and paid for a long distance call over to the Midlands (north of London for all the folks who have never had the pleasure of visiting the British Isles). I had to ask him some questions; like how old the site was, where he was getting his inbound links, and more importantly, what kind of money was he pulling in.

We made it a short call to save me the many dimes, and we switched over to a Skype call. He proceeded to fill me in on his site and which company he was using. The web builder he used was hosted by Web.com, so I was quick to get surfing and check these guys out. It turns out they are based in Atlanta, GA, and have some serious muscle. Should have guessed, judging by their domain name.

After I prepared some of this article, I Skyped my buddy back and asked if I could login into his builder account. He said I could give it a good thrashing, as long as I backed up his site and blog. We backed it up, and I began flipping photos, loading flash files, tweaking code, changing templates, adjusting setting……you get the point right. What surprised me was the speed. All the ones and zeros were crunching along nicely, and he said that this speed was the norm since he started his project.

Just before I got off the final Skype call, he mentioned that the Web.com support staff were very helpful with his SEO. Sounded like all the right advice to me. No tricks, no scripts, and all good clicks. So my fellow cynics, I have to admit that when it comes to site builders, I think someone might have finally got it right.
