What is a Doorway Page?

Friday, October 12th, 2007

I’ve been wondering what a doorway page is for 5 years now. Whenever I do some deep research into it, I get the same stock answer.

“Doorway pages are pages of content created using software that have very little quality content, and site managers use them to artifically inflate their page rank and traffic. Often the doorway pages are cloaked redirects which is and even uglier manipulation”

Ok….fair enough. But that does not answer the question in sufficient detail. I think I’ve finally figured out what a doorway page has to do to be considered as such by the SEs.

Obviously cloaking and redirecting will be seen as doorway pages by the search engines, but what about pages that Do have SOME valid content, and are used to get traffic and income.

When I first started the Internet income game, I used an eBook that showed me how to build niche sites. This was long before I blogged. Unfortunately, the author of the eBook unwittingly showed his students how to create web sites that use doorway pages. Because of this I saw some of my first sites getting banned by Google.

Ironically, I paid a writer to help me write all the content, so I had original content, but the site(s) still got banned. This led me to testing, and I’ve been testing for 4 years now.

This is what I’ve found:

1) it’s doesn’t matter how good your content is because your pages can still be seen as doorway pages
2) it’s doesn’t matter if you have a small number of these pages, because if they’re seen as doorway pages, they’ll get banned.

There is one sure way (that I’ve found so far) to avoid having allot of pages considered doorway pages on your domains. DON’T LINK TO THE HOME PAGE of the domain from any of your article pages. Also, if you have random links going to and from related article pages, the search engines will not see them as doorway pages.

So if you have a site you want to add a whack of pages to and you want to avoid the doorway page problem do this:

Create a new page off your main domain which acts as an index page for the particular topic. Add all your new pages in that topic or niche from this new page, and you can create a link on all your article pages back to this new index page, but DON’T LINK ANYWHERE ELSE. Don’t link to your domain home URL, and don’t have link clusters in the sidebar or at the bottom of the page. Only link from within the text to other pages in this “satellite” niche.

After 3 years of using this technique I’ve never had a site or blog banned for doorway page penalties.

These are my personal finding. I would be very interested to hear YOUR thoughts on this subject.

Future Google Page Rank Check - Stupid or What?

Monday, October 1st, 2007

So don’t usually worry much about Google PR (page rank), but I have been getting ready to expand Zulit.com with some product reviews, and pages to capitalize on it’s traffic. Before I started working my butt off doing so, I thought I should check my future Google page rank.

Well I did and it almost gave me a heart attack. I was checking all the Google servers for my page rank using the domain only. Zulit (dot) com. WRONG!!! It showed your humble narrator’s precious site as a 0 page rank. That’s right! ZERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I was sick to my stomach, proving that Google PR DOES mean something to me after all.  Apparently I was living in denial on that claim.

So I spent 3 days accepting that Zulit was toast, and I built 3 other blogs, and started working hard on them. Still deeply saddened and didn’t know why Zulit was getting the Google hammer.

This morning I was looking at future page rank tools all over the Internet. I discovered the mistake I made when entering in Zulit for PR checking. You have to inlcude the full URL, and NOT just the domain name, as most site linking to you are using your full URL for linking in. AAARGHHH!!! Stupid or what. I’ve been doing this for almost 5 years now and I didn’t know that.

SO! Don’t make the same mistake I made. Be sure to check your Google PR using your FULL URL. Below is handy little tool for checking your Google Page Rank. Actually, I consider this tool to be the best future Google page rank checking tool in the Internet.

PLEASE NOTE: This tool will provide an estimation of the future PageRank and should not be considered precise.
Your domain(s): Enter each address on a new line (Maximum 10)
(eg. http://www.zulit.com)
Please remember to include the full url of your domains

Link Building Piece in Six Ideas

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Submitted by Mike Kuhn @ http://www.nichewebsitekit.com

Story…

I’m sure you know the traditional and often taught ways of getting much-needed inbound links. It’s almost always the same: trade links with other websites, write articles for submission, and submit your site to as many directories as possible. These are all useful methods, and all have their purpose, but there is one method that is often overlooked that should form the cornerstone of your link-building efforts. In this article I’ll show you exactly what to do to get the most effective links you can get: from authority sites in your niche.

I. Build your site up a bit first, adding some good content.

II. Look at a small subsection of your site, and brainstorm what type of site you think might be interested in that section of your site without being an actual competitor to your main site itself. For instance, if you have a site on “landscaping,” and within your site you have a subsection about koi ponds, other sites that don’t compete with your main site but may be interested in koi ponds would be fish hobbyist sites, or perhaps even sites that focus only on koi ponds.

III. In Google, search with the broad keyword of your subsection. With the above example, I would search Google for “koi ponds” and also “fish hobby.” Click through to some of the sites that appear in the top ten.

IV. Email the webmaster of EVERY one of these sites and offer to write content for them. Tell them that you’ll taylor the article to their reader’s needs, and that it will only appear on their site. Ask them what they need. Tell them that you only require a link to the related subsection on your website.

V. When you are ready to write an article, make it GOOD. Really do your research, and treat it just like an essay in high school. You’re teacher will be grading you on the subject. If you don’t think you can write it well enough, it is well worth it to find a good article writer and pay him. Don’t spend less than $20 for an article of this importance.

VI. At the bottom of the article, add a SHORT author biography. Briefly explain your site, and who you are and what you offer. Within this bio, make sure you have a link to ONLY the subsection of your site, as well as an anchor text link to that subsection. An example would be: “Mike is a landscaping enthusiast and has installed many koi ponds.

Do this as many times as you can for EVERY major subsection on your site. This is why I also recommend siloing your site, if nothing else than just for organizational purposes, and writing a handful of articles in place of each one article you would normally write. Links from the top ten at Google will do more amazing things for your site than a hundred links from general web directories.

Affordable SEO Pt #6 - Linking to, and commenting on, other blogs

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

Bloggers - Affordable SEO seriesI’ve heard bloggers mention that linking to other blogs or sites is not a good thing to do. They say it bleeds off page rank and shows that you don’t have anything original to say. I disagree.

You need to link to other blogs and sites (periodically) when there is information on another Internet page that can be of value to your readers. The search engines love this kind of participation, and so will your readers. For instance, I would link to this article at ctbizblogs.com because it reads well on the same subject as this post.

Here is another great article on the virtues of outbound linking over at successful-blog.com.

Another plus your blog gets when your article links to another on-topic Internet page is this; when you create a link you are adding to the number of keywords found in your page code. In other words, when you add a link in a post, you add the URL address of the page you are linking to, which will likely have keywords in it that are on-topic to your post. You will again be adding critical keywords to your code when you title the link. This is a powerful realization. This all has to do with spider bait for the search engines.

I’ve also heard bloggers mention that posting on other blogs is not important due to the fact that most have blogs have no-follow tags for comments URLs. I disagree.

First of all; Some blogs do not use no-follow tags in the comment URL presentation. Second of all; it’s very important to keep in the loop by posting your comments on other blogs. Let em know you’re there! Let other bloggers see your idea(s) and let them see a link to your blog or site. This is critical when you are just starting out with your blog. If you are new to this and want to learn how to make a comment, just click the comments link at the bottom of this post, and leave your bit. If you don’t have a web site or blog, simply leave the URL field blank.

Affordable SEO Pt #5 - Inbound Linking The Right Way

Friday, August 18th, 2006

There was a time back in the dark old days of Internet optimization (like 2 years ago), when webmasters simply gathered as many inbound links as possible - and I’m talking about any old links. Link farming was almost the status quo, if you can believe that. Webmasters would gather inbound links by the hundreds every month from web sites that had nothing in common with their own.

It worked very well too - if you could recruit over 1000 inbound links to your site, you could rank very high in the search engines. (especially Google). But that game is all over now, and if you are still doing that kind of linking your site has likely been punted from Google, and perhaps MSN as well. The game has changed dramatically, so I want to update some of the new players who might be reading this.

The kind of linking you need to do is what I call “natural linking” - meaning the procurement of inbound links that makes sense to the search engine algorithms. Try to only add a handful of good links to your site per month. 5-10 inbound links every month will do fine. Below is my definition of a “good link”.

Definition of a good link:

a) An inbound link from a pagerank (PR) of 3 or higher
b) An inbound link from a page that is on topic with your web site or blog

Avoid linking with sites that have nothing to do with yours. This a sure fire way to get Google’s shirt in a knot. They’ll penalize you for that kind of linking, so don’t be tempted to load up on inbound links with some kind of fancy software or script. Just be natural about it.

You must be sure not to add other sites by large numbers per month, or harvest inbound links in droves every month. Google sees that as “unatural linking” as well.

The best way to get unbound links is slowly, and from other bloggers or webmasters that are pointing out your content to their visitors. This is a very natural process, and the search engines will love your site or blog for it. Â
