If you’ve decided to “pack it in” and your equipment (drums, guitars, keyboards, piano, violin(s), microphone(s), typewriter, or notepads have been put aside, then I think I have a job for you.

If you have been trying to “make it” for years, and you are tired of having no money, I think I have a job for you.

If you have finally “come to your senses”, and realize you need to start thinking about ways to make some money, doing something that is fun, creative, with a potential for high earnings, then I have a job idea for you.

This post is for musicians who have been trying for years to make a living in the music business, and are starting to wonder if there is another way to make a living besides “working for the man”. First of all, let us explore why, and how, we got here in the first place.

Why We Wanted to be Musicians in the First Place

The first reason musicians fall in love with music is for the pure enjoyment of making music, listening to music, and creating music. Just the simple act of playing a guitar, a piano, a set of drums, or perhaps singing into a microphone, can be so inspiring and beautiful that it’s hard to explain in words. I know that when I was a young boy, at the age of 10 or 11, I watched my father play guitar for the first time and was very curious. Eventually I started to pick up his guitars and plucked a few strings. Over the years of my adolescence when I picked up a guitar it had more and more meaning. Soon I was able to play a full song on the guitar, and then I was completely addicted to music (for years to come).

What I’m getting at (slowly) is that our (us musicians) first initial motives for getting involved with music were absolutely pure and clear of ego. I am talking about the actual good musicians out there, and not “fly by nighters”. I’m talking about musicians who actually develop their craft well enough that they become accomplished, whether that be in the art of recording, songwriting, or just playing a single instrument. These are the musicians and songwriters that usually accomplish something in their chosen field — the ones that truly love the act of playing music, at their core, are not just gratifying their egos.

There are some musicians that certainly gravitated towards music making for purely egotistical reasons, such as a way to meet girls, a way to make money, or a way to get attention. Even the musicians who start playing music out of pure love, can (and usually do) become seduced by the ego side of the music business at some point or another. In fact, if the ego takes over completely, it will destroy the initial love for music that the musician had at the genesis of their early inspiration.

So the reasons (motives) are varied, but in this post I am talking about the musicians that had a pure love for music from the very beginning, and were not that wrapped up with the ego side of things.

We Wanted To Do What We Loved For a Living

Obviously all human beings would like to do what they love for living, and this is what drives most serious musicians towards their ultimate goal. We want to be able to make a decent living playing music, recording music, or writing music. At least we think we do.

All of the different motives that drive us to play music, and be part of the music industry, can change over time, and the ones that keep being full-time musicians the rest of their lives, usually have to pay a price. It is very difficult to try and make a full-time living being a musician. Usually there is lack of money. Usually there is lack of support. Often there is a lack of respect from society as a whole.

As young aspiring musicians we all dreamed of living the ultimate dream. We dreamt of making millions of dollars, playing our own music for millions of people, and never having to “work for the man”. This last aspect (of not wanting to work for the man) is a big, big, big, deal! We never wanted to spend a day of our life doing a job we really don’t like, and taking orders from somebody else just to make a little bit of money. In fact, this was a true nightmare for me and my young friends when we were growing up as young musicians.

There are psychologists who suggest that sex is the driving motivation behind all males in human society. I don’t believe this for a second, but when I was a young teenage boy, playing in teenage bands, I did meet some musicians that were solely concerned about how well they did with the girls. These musicians never lasted long, and they soon splintered off and left the music scene altogether.

There are other musicians who believed that with fame and money they could get any girl he wanted (or woman) and this was another ego driving force behind their motivations. These guys never lasted long either. They usually became frustrated very quickly, and after their first couple of bands failed to “make it”, they left the music scene altogether.

The musicians who usually make music their full-time occupation, and their total income, are the ones that have two main motives behind their actions.

They have an absolute pure love for making music

They want the freedom that some highly successful musicians appear have

Unfortunately, musicians who think succeeding in the music business gives them freedom, soon find out that they are simply working for the man anyway – that is if they get that big recording contract and sell a few millions “units”.

Just like any source of income in this world, you have to get the money from somebody, and you have to do something, or be something, to receive it. I remember one of the bands I played in did nothing but cover music (a musician’s term for playing songs that are not yours – just popular with the masses) so that we could “make a living doing what we love”. Unfortunately, if you are playing music that is not your own, and you are on the road every week from town to town, in all sorts of temperatures and conditions, it doesn’t stay fun for long. It’s truly a young person’s game.

I’ve know musicians who are extremely talented, and extremely in love with what they do, and they end up being true recording artists. They aren’t famous but they have a fair amount of freedom working in their own studios, creating music for commercials (jingles) or movie soundtracks. Unfortunately, this can become nothing more than a job and you are stuck in the same place you always dreaded as a young and upcoming musician – working day in and day out to meet deadlines and pay the bills.

When we were wary young musicians this is what we used to call “selling out”. We believed that playing music just for the sake of making money was simply an act of selling our souls to the corporate Devil(s), and it was paramount to treason!

Regardless of what our motives were, growing up as young men and women aspiring to be great musicians, the road was hard. True freedom was rarely ever tasted.

But let’s face it, when you are 21 years old, it feels PRETTY COOL (at first) when you drive the big truck into a town, unload the equipment, set up the P.A and lighting system, do sound check, go to the hotel room, have a nap, get cleaned up, go back to the club, mingle in the crowd, feel the nerves and the excitement, saunter on stage, plug in, and let ‘em have it. (I think we smoked a fattie in there somewhere too) I mean – for us is was the 1970′s and “canned music” played by “DJs” was NOT cool. Musicians got allot more work back then.

Why We Failed to Make a Full Time Living as Musicians

The Commercial Aspect

Many musicians (I should say ex-musicians) that now make their living doing something entirely different, we’ll say that they didn’t make it in the music business because they just weren’t talented enough. It’s always a good joke, and I use that same joke myself. However, this is rarely the reason for not making it in the music business full-time.

What we failed to do as young musicians was understand the true commercial aspect of the music business. Most of us (almost all of us) take a musical path based on the music we love, and we exclaim how we would never sell out just for the money.

It’s truly ironic that young musicians often say, “I don’t want to sell out”, when in reality, they have to sell out if they want to make a full-time living in the music business.

I remember reading many different interviews with local musicians, and one thing really stuck out in regards to the commercialization of music. One interview was with a now famous musician who got his start in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I met him a couple of times because I worked in a music store located in North Van (now defunct Richard’s Rare Guitars). He came in to buy guitar strings, guitar picks, or whatever he needed that particular day. This was Bryan Adams, and he succeeded far beyond anyone’s intial expectations (except his, because he wanted it all, and was really confident about it).

At a very young age Bryan understood that he wanted to be a full-time musician, and he was going to do whatever it took to succeed. He understood that if he wanted to be a full-time musician he was going to have to play music that made money, and that the music industry would only support that end-state. In one of Bryan’s interviews back then he mentioned that he wanted nothing to do with making music, “just for the sake of art”. He was point-blank about his motives, and said that he would only write, record, and perform music that had a commercially viable component to it.

I have read other interviews with commercially successful musicians who discuss the same sort of thing that Bryan Adams was discussing. They fully understood the commercial reality of the music business, and they were willing to play anything to succeed financially. Another one of these artists is Shania Twain, who also comes from Canada. Shania understood at an early age that it was a music business, and she vowed only to get involved with the music making process if it was geared towards commercial success.

The outcome of this being that most of us starving musicians who held on to our lofty ideals, failed to make music for the rest of our lives. The reality is that we wouldn’t be happy making music just for the sake of making money, so in fact, we did the right thing – we quit. There were some local exceptions I can think of like No Means No who have traveled and played their very own brand of music around the world in Europe and North America. These guys were never worried about being rich or having “company pensions” – they just wanted to be free to play their music.

We Weren’t In the Right Place

Millions of musicians growing up with dreams of making it big in the music business, don’t live in the right location. Yes, it’s true that some musicians do succeed from far and away remote places – but this is very rare. Even in those rare cases, these musicians are discovered by people in the music industry who are established in the main centers.

The main centers for the music industry are Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, London England, etc. It is in these main centers where all of the deals are made. It’s in these places that all the decisions are made about which music will be promoted and recorded for commercial purposes. If I was seriously pursuing a career in commercial music, as a young man, I would have done what Neil Young did, and moved down to Los Angeles or Nashville at a young age. You see this pattern with many of the great musicians in our time. Probably the best example of this would be Bob Dylan.

Bob Dylan grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, and if he had not migrated to New York City with his guitar and his dreams (and his encyclopedic knowledge of folk music in the United States – Woody Guthrie etc.) he never would’ve made it to where he is. Dylan would have simply been a man by the name of Robert Allen Zimmerman (his birth name), with a guitar, a very scratchy voice, living and working in Minnesota. People would have likely never seen his real talent, and even the ones that did would only be few local musicians in Dultuh who recognized his talent.

The right location is key, and that can never be understated. If you are a young musicians today who wants to make a living playing music, I urge you to get away from the smaller town or city you live in. Take that risk, and move yourself (even if it means leaving the band you are in) to a major center such as Los Angeles or New York.

Right Time and Right Music

Even if you are in the right location, have extreme talent, extreme originality, and youth, you still have to get lucky to make it as a musician. You have to have, or be involved with, a particular style of music that is desired by the masses and by the music business at the time. The people in the music business who decide which artists to sign up for a record contract, and which artists to promote with their star making machine, is based on money and profit. Most record companies just cannot afford to take a chance on an uncertain musical style or artist. What we have now, in this new century, is a music business that is managed by corporations. These corporations work solely for profit, and usually won’t take a chance on something that is quirky or new.

This is why it is never record companies and corporations that make all of the changes that come about in the music business. The corporations and the big record companies were not responsible for the punk rock movement, the blues movement, the bebop jazz movement, the new wave movement, rap music and/or hip-hop music. Nope — these big companies just jumped on the bandwagon after these musical styles broke out. They are only interested in profit, (and I don’t mean this in a mean way or a negative way) so they will not take a chance and promote something that is completely unique. If you are a music business executive, or A&R rep, please comment below if you think otherwise.

This is why many of the older musicians or ex-musicians (like myself) now believe that the music industry is stagnant (or maybe WE are stagnant!). It needs another shaking up, but it seems like there is very little new musicians can do at this point. There’ll always be many different styles of popular music, but there is only so many sounds you can make out of the limited instruments used in popular music – only so many ways you can dress, and only so many ways you can manipulate your voice on a microphone. I’m not saying that there won’t be something unique and different coming up in the future the music business (there will) – I am just saying that there are not many record companies willing to take a chance on these new ideas.

It used to be that record companies were relatively small, fly-by-night operations, and big business wasn’t involved yet. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the corporations stepped in and wanted to be part of the whole music business engine. Up until then the music industry was, to a large extent, developed and run by music lovers and music makers. This is why so much of the great music from the 1960s and 1970s is still so popular, and so timeless, today. It wasn’t music that was solely chosen for promotion because of its ability to make money. It was chosen because it was unique, had great content, and great style.

So a lot of it comes down to the timing and the style of music you are making. A lot of it comes down to plain money as I have mentioned above, and one last thing I would like to add to this discussion – American Idol (I couldn’t help myself).

Why American Idol and Britain’s Got Talent Have Damaged The Music Business

The reason for the television successes like American Idol, and Britain’s Got Talent, etc., is because there is a huge swell of young people with the ego-created dream of being a star, and their willingness to bear themselves to the world in pursuit of their dreams. The music business loves these kinds of shows, such as American Idol, because the contestants of these talent shows are weeded out and hand-picked by judges who know something about the music business. Essentially, these judges act as pseudo-A&R men (or women) for the music business, and they do the initial weeding out for record companies.

Some of these lucky contestants work their way up the ranks of these talent shows because they can sing well, and have some kind of attractive style. These top contestants gain massive exposure on the world stage, so basically the television program American Idol or Britain’s Got Talent carry out all of the initial marketing for these young singers. This saves the record companies millions and millions and millions of dollars in promotion and advertising costs. They love it! Unfortunately, this doesn’t do much for the consumers of music – the listeners.

Most of these young artists (with the odd exception) can only sing, and perhaps play an instrument or two. Their vocals are good, but somewhat plain and traditional. They (almost always) don’t write lyrics themselves, and even if they do write lyrics, they aren’t exactly inspiring and original. Certainly nothing that gets you thinking like a Bob Dylan lyric.

Can you imagine Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen on American Idol?

Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen (just to mention a couple of famous artists, because there are many great artists like them) who don’t have traditionally good singing voices, but yet have a great deal of character in their vocals. The judges wouldn’t give artists like this a second glance. They would be laughed off their very first auditions. Simon Cowell would screw up his face and make a snide remark as he dismissed them as losers.

Could you imagine the music industry without great artists like these who have traditionally bad voices. We would have missed out on a lot of GREAT music. Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, Leonard Cohen, Patty Smyth, Iggy Pop, David Bowie, etc. etc. etc. would have been laughed off in the first audition of American Idol, and the same rings true for an endless list of great artists from the 1960s and 1970s. I bet even the great Freddie Mercury would have been sent home packing in the first round of auditions as well, because although he had an AMAZING voice filled with power, passion and nuance, it wasn’t smooth or silky. Yep….he would have been panned.

So when the record companies and corporations make decisions on who they’re going to promote, they’re going to make the decisions based on how much money they need to spend to get the artist off the ground, and how much the money they can make when the artist (if the artist) gets off the ground and becomes somewhat of a success. They would prefer to sign up American Idol contestants and make a quick buck from their, almost always, temporary star status. We the listeners get more mundane music with bland lyrics, predictable melodies, slick production, and cutesy faces.

The Perfect Job For An Ex-Musician

Now back to the main theme of this article – musicians making money working at home.

I have theorized about what makes a successful moneymaking blogger tick, and, and I have wondered why so many ex-musicians often succeed with their online businesses. I have come to some conclusions, which is why I wrote this post in the first place.

Here is a basic outline of why I believe ex-musicians (and current musicians) can succeed with an online business.

Patience

Patience is something that musicians know only too well. It takes an incredible effort to write great lyrics, train your voice on a microphone, play an instrument, put together a band, and make it all happen. Musicians will work for many years at a time on one or two projects without ever being sure they’ll make a single penny from their work, or get any long-term satisfaction out of the experience.

In short, musicians are really good at suffering! Musicians are similar to writers in that they can be working months at a time on a project that may never see the light of day, but yet they keep on trying. This kind of patience is what it takes when you are starting an online business, or a brand-new blog. This is the kind of patience you should practice if you ever want your online business to succeed.

Ability to Dream the Ultimate Dream

All aspiring musicians who’ve worked really hard toward their dream of being a full-time musician, are not afraid to dream. As a matter of fact, most musicians spend their early years of life being told that they need to settle down and face reality. We were told that the odds of making it are very slim, and those that loved us the most would often encourage us to quit, get a haircut, and get a job.

It takes a special kind of person who throws all caution to the wind to pursue the impossible dream. You can say this about actors, painters, writers, and people in the movie business as well. We have to be able to believe in a grandiose outcome, or we would never be willing to take the risk of giving up so much time and money in our pursuits.

Hard Work

Serious musicians understand fully what hard work looks like, tastes like, feels like, and smells like. We understand the ridiculous hours it takes to create a piece of music and then finally get it recorded. We understand the hard work it takes to get a band of people together and keep them happy. We understand how many hours of rehearsal is required before we are ready to be in front of an audience or in a recording studio. We understand the hours of work it takes to learn an instrument proficiently.

We Are Used to Being Poor

In the very early stages of creating a long-term online income, we must be grateful for the pennies we receive, and see them as a great success along the way. If we want to be full-time, we will have to work really hard for very little money in the beginning. All bloggers, and online business owners who built up from nothing, will tell you that you shouldn’t quit your day job if you are worried about having a fairly decent lifestyle.

If you want to drive a brand-new car, live in a big house, in a fancy neighborhood, and go on trips two or three times a year, you won’t be able to do it with the money you make from your first blog or website. At least not in the first couple of years – that’s for sure!

Musicians are used to being poor and living off very little income, so it is not such a shock to their system to work hard for very little money. I remember being extremely poor and literally underfed for years at a time. I remember not owning a vehicle, not owning a home, and never even dreaming that I would have enough money to go on a trip somewhere. I remember having very little clothing, and absolutely no extra money for anything besides the basic necessities.

Not only was I used to being very poor, I remember going to houses that were rented by groups of musicians who kept a studio in the basement. This is very common because musicians have to pool their resources to have a roof over their heads and a place to record and rehearse their music. Most young musicians have no money coming in, and quite often live on the absolute fringes of society. My neighbors were often pimps, drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes. I could tell some stories – and I think I will.

The amazing thing is, when I think of the lifestyles I have described above, any person with an Internet connection and a half decent computer, could earn their way out of the poor house in a few years time. They could do it with just one blog, and I have seen bloggers who have created earnings of $100,000 (or more) a year just from one blog. This is really inspiring to me, although I would not really want to go back to a meager lifestyle, and not have any of the things, and the freedoms, I have now.

The Creative Spark and Ability

Musicians that have been serious for many years of their life, at one point or another, have a creative ability. They tend to be artists at the core regardless of whether or not they practiced in the disciplines of music or not. They usually have the ability to express themselves in any kind of medium. They usually have the ability to be writers, graphic design artists, web coders, and web site builders. This creative spark is necessary at some point along the way if you want to succeed online. The search engines and your website visitors demand it, and they expect it. If you don’t provide creativity and originality, your competition will beat you.

So if you are one of those struggling and starving musicians I have been talking about here today, and you want to find out if there is a way to make money without having to “work for the man”, this might be the idea you have been looking for.

You can start researching online income (how to make money blogging) and start a brand-new journey. You probably already have the unique aptitudes (mentioned above) required to succeed online. If you are still in the throes of pursuing your dreams in the music industry, you probably don’t even want to read this article, and I don’t blame you. I certainly wouldn’t want to read something like this if I was still dreaming of stardom. Maybe just keep this idea in the back of your mind, just in case you want to make a decent living without putting a suit, cutting your hair, like some corporate slave.

It doesn’t really take much, as far as understanding technology, to be a successful blogger and make some decent money. In relative terms, compared to what the average struggling musician makes, Internet income is viable as far as replacement income goes. If you are somebody who comes from a rich family, and have always had a lot of money to spend, and perhaps had a good job land in your lap through family connections, you probably won’t make it as a blogger. You won’t have the patience and the willingness to work long hours, for years at a time, to secure the ultimate income. I don’t want to be a downer, but I believe this to be the truth.

Those of us who come from fairly humble beginnings, and spent some years of our life being poor, have an inbuilt advantage when it comes to succeeding online.

This is a post I did tonight from the car in a grocery store parking lot dictating into a digital voice recorder. I have highlighted and bolded most of the places I had to edit from the dictation which you can see played in the video below. The text below is not perfectly aligned with the video, because the videos were yanked into Mac iMovie willy-nilly. Kind of a wacko post really, but some of my beliefs on blogging, and search engine success are in this. Please comment whether or not you agree with my theory on “volume blogging”

Terry and Houston

So this is my post which I guess is a video post as well as a typical text post. I have trained Dragon NaturallySpeaking (detracted) now so that when I make a post in this fashion it knows what I’m saying pretty well. I have to do some edits though and I would say I have to edit between a dozen words to maybe 25-26 words if I’m doing a post that’s about 2000 words. So that’s pretty darn good. I figured out that my typing speed normally when I’m doing it with my fingers is about 35 words a minute if you include thinking about what I’m going to say and everything. If I’m using speech recognition software my speed can be upwards of 110 words a minute. On this post it will be nowhere close to that because I am the doing this and filming with the camera at the same time, which is kind of weird. But usually I speak like this and I am very careful how I use my diction. In the backseat you can see I got the boys again - Houston and Bentley over there and if I flip this around you can see them.

So I’m starting this again because I pushed the button when I was showing the dogs in the backseat. We can see that it’s -25°C here right now so it’s just a perfect day for a walk (edited). This guy just leaves his truck running at the big old Superstore. Okay where was I going with this….

Terry Being Goof Ball

We use nothing but (edited) WordPress for all of our blogs. We use the WordPress blogging platform on our domains which are on different niche products. I know that very often people look at my latest Adsense earnings screenshot (edited) which you can see at the top of my blog on the top right-hand side. And they always wonder how I’m making that kind of money blogging, because they can well understand that Zulit.com isn’t making that kind of money. As a matter of fact….Zulit.com…..well, now it makes about $15 or $20 a day because I have the odd weird article page getting traffic.

I have some person looking at me like I’m a freak and I guess they wouldn’t be exactly wrong. But anyway, back to blogging. All of my blogs are on niche subjects, for instance I just started one on farm equipment. All of these blogs start off the same. I do some keyword research on the least competitive, but high traffic keywords. If you understand Internet marketing and Internet traffic you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about, and if you are completely new to the game it basically means I find out which keywords are being searched for a lot, but at the same time don’t have many people putting up websites and pages on these keywords. It’s so competitive now on the Internet that there really isn’t too many extremely niche subjects that you can talk about. The truth is, that no matter how competitive your subject matter is on your blog, you can succeed by simply writing, writing, writing, and writing until you’re blue in the face, or you can just talk until you’re blue in the face.

Okay so that’s enough of this post I’m going to turn this off now (detracted) I’ll continue this on text for the next five minutes.

Daily Blogging Schedule (title added)

The Olympus WS-500M

I start blogging about nine o’clock in the morning and then I stop about 3:30, four clock, sometimes as late as five o’clock, but if I do go till 5 PM I am burned right out of my mind. Today I dictated over 20,000 words of fresh unique content which went on different blogs, and different websites. What I do is a turn on my speech recognition software and I have WordPress open in the edit window. So there is no dragging and dropping text from the speech recognition software or a desktop, or a text file, or a word file. All of the words simply dictate into my WordPress backend dashboard in the edit box area and I fix corrections as I go along. With a post like this one where I am doing it inside of a car, there are more edits that have to be made, the more corrections that have to be carried out. Why? Because I can’t see what’s going on to the screen when I’m doing this and when you can’t see what’s going on the screen your accuracy isn’t quite the same.

For instance, if I make a mistake I can see it immediately on the screen and I will usually fix the problem right there and then at the next period. When I’m out here, outside in a car for this example, I can’t see what’s coming on the screen, so of course there are more edits and errors to look after. But I would have to say that my accuracy is now about 90%, or better.

So today was a typical day in that I worked from nine o’clock to three o’clock, then went and had a nap, woke up and had a shower, and got ready to go out with my wife and my dogs. In the evening when we are going out to get some errands run I usually stay in the car with the dogs and do some more dictating and do a post for Zulit. You see, Zulit is nothing more than a hobby blog which has been sort of my diary during these years of learning how to make a living online. It doesn’t really matter how much money this blog makes. It’s just a hobby, and my way of communicating with people who make their living the same way. One thing for sure, it’s a really great way to live, and a great way to make your money, but you no longer socialize with co-workers and people very often. Well, I never socialize with co-workers.

So now, I am near the end of this post and I’ll turn the camera around one more time and we can do the finish -- so hello there fellow bloggers. This has been fun and strange all at the same time. There’s not really much to say, because let’s face it, you have got the point. We can blog a lot faster, and get a lot more work done in our daily, weekly, and monthly lives. I do believe that if you want to succeed in blogging you need to be thinking in terms of volume. There are many different theories on how to get high traffic on your blog, but I truly believe the most effective way is to have volume. A great example of a guy who understands this is Steve Pavlina, and you can see his blog @ StevePavlina.com.

He has always been sort of the master, I would say, of blogging with great volume. His blog post about making money blogging is over 7000 words. I know that Steve was involved with dictation equipment such as I’m using right now, but he types very fast so he actually went back to typing. For me it’s not really an option because I can’t type as fast as he can. (detracted)

I have noticed that the blog posts that have over 1500 to approximately 2000, 3000, 5000 words succeed much more than short little throwaway posts. Truthfully, I would have to say that I never saw any serious results on any blog until there was a least one longer post upwards and over 2500 words. The search engines seem to respond to having a good chunk of content that size going up onto your domain. They can see that it’s purely 100% original, which I’ve talked about many times before here, and that there is no other piece of content on the Internet that has this exact signature to it. Basically when we take 5 -- 6 words and put quotes around it, you won’t find any results on the Internet on Google, Yahoo, or MSN, just like it. That is something else that experienced bloggers will understand obviously. Newcomers will scratch their heads perhaps.

There are many theories about linking and how important linking is. Yes, linking is important in the long run. Of course it is but it’s nothing that can be rushed. The search engines are very sophisticated now and any time somebody tells you you can use some software to pump up your rankings, is leading you astray. For instance, to clarify myself, I have talked about using link software -- linking software, and some black hat tools like Xrumer. These tools do work but they work on a temporary basis. You can get ranked quite high for some competitive keywords fairly quickly using a tool like that, but in the end it won’t last. It’s not even worth if you ask me. I have done some testing with a Xrumer, and I assure you it’s not the way to guarantee any long-term viability with an Internet business.

So that leads us to the people who really do succeed. People like; Darren Rose of Problogger.net, and Shoemaker over @ Shoemoney.com, and of course Steve Pavlina which I mentioned. I do believe that it’s volume that will get you there. I believe that having posts that have some form of originality too, will get you there.

(detracted) Well anyway, I think I’m done here and I’m going to move on to a different post for a different blog. We will see you next time on Zulit.com.

Well, it’s been a great holiday so far in Idaho. Been on the lake in the boat the last 5 days, and the weather is really hot. Fantastic actually.

My family is shopping at Northtown, and I’m typing from the Barnes & Noble (at the Starbucks). I love these books stores, and can easily spend 3–4 hours on the Internet, or browsing the latest books.

I bought a couple more Wayne Dyer books a few days ago, and they’ve been enjoyable, like all his work is. I love reading the self-help gurus when I’m on holidays. With these books, and a lake, I’m taken away from trivial worries, and my prevailing addiction to work. The Dyer book I’m enjoying the most is “Getting In The Gap”. It includes a meditation cd in which Wayne shows his readers how to use Japa to “Get In The Gap”. Amazing…..but will take some practise for sure.

Yes, I realize that working on my blog is not exactly “getting away from work”, but it’s a must. I have to feed my fix during the holidays once and awhile – check my commissions, Adsense, Chitika, CJ, Clickbank, etc.

I’ll be posting some video on Zulit in the next week. Likely the lake, the stars, or my dog taking a crap.

Had a very unusual bump in affiliate commissions and leads bring up this Friday’s income.

Friday is usually a slower day, going into the weekend, but like any business – you never know. One of our sites got a commission for web hosting, which was $85, so this is one of the reasons for the atypical results.

Total contextual advertising income = $321.57 USD

Total Affiliate Commissions – Leads and Sales = $188.41 USD
——————————————————–
Total Income = $509.98 USD

Total Advertising Costs Out = $153.21 USD

Total Net Income June 15th/2007 = 356.77

Note: I’m heading off to Montana tomorrow noon. We’ll be working in a KOA campground. This is the same KOA campground with the high-speed Internet, and the little cabins I wrote about in my ROI from the KOA article.

I will be starting a whole new series of blogs on a new market that I’m really excited about.

It’s great when you find a whole new market to create income from. It ends up being allot of work in the end, because each new market requires 5–6 fully functional blogs.

Another good question on Problogger on the fine art of blogging. What would you do with 10 hours of blogging?

Ross asks – “What is more important, working on getting more traffic (digg, links from high traffic sites) or working on search engine optimisation? If you had 10 hours to spend on one or the other which would benefit you more?”

I think both strategies can be important for a blog – depending upon it’s life stage. They’re also really linked…

I’m a big believer in getting good SEO principles into play on a new blog from day one so in the very early days I’d work on some SEO above trying to leverage other site’s traffic. However most blog platforms come with fairly decent SEO these days and most of what I’d do on an SEO front after a few basic tweaks is while I’m writing a post (ie good titles, using keywords well etc.

In terms of leveraging traffic from other sites – a lot of this also happens for me in the writing process. Knowing the type of style and topic of posts that people like to link to is a big part of it. I don’t tend to actively promote many of my posts to other sites these days but instead let my readers do a lot of it.

Not sure if I’ve really answered your question Ross. So I’ll say this:

If it was in the first week of a blog’s life I’d work on the SEO of the blog (things like getting title tags right, looking at how it interlinks internally etc). In fact I’d work on this stuff before the blog was launched – but it probably wouldn’t take 10 hours. Once this stuff is set up it’s not something I generally spend a lot of time on – my focus switches to content creation.

In the coming weeks (and months) I’d work hard on developing key content that is useful, unique and attractive to other sites. I’d also promote some of that key content to other key blogs in the niche I was attempting to break into (keep in mind that in doing this you’re also really working on your SEO as incoming links play a big part in helping your Search Engine ranking). 10 hours a week doing this can really have a powerful impact!

What would you say is the most effective use of 10 hours as a blogger?

New bloggers may be interested to read this post regarding fake blog comments.

When you start a new blog, it’s tempting to create your own fake comments, to give new visitors a sense of importance, and action. Read on.

Preston asks – “I started a new blog about a month ago. I got about 40 topics written. But only 2 comments. I’m thinking of faking comments, making a few users and get a nice sample of comments on some of the blog posts I’ve made.

Is this not a good use of my extra time, and i should do something else related to my blog? or spending some time doing this, is a good idea.”

Thanks Preston. Let me share a few thoughts.

Congratulations on your new blog and the 40 posts that you’ve written. 40 posts in two months is a great effort and if you can keep up that level of posting you’ll have a great foundation of content for your blog.

Don’t be too discouraged by the lack of comments to this point. For a month old blog I don’t think it’s too bad an achievement to have 2 comments. While I know you’d want more I’d encourage you to stick with it and be patient. Many month old blogs would probably not even have 2!

Fake comments. Hmmm – I think this one will cause some debate and I’d love to hear how many ProBlogger readers have written them in the starting of their blogs.

I’ll be honest and say that on my first blog I did do a few fake comments in the very very early days. I used them in the same way that you’re suggesting here – to get conversations going and to make the blog look a little more active.

So I understand the temptation to use them – however I can say from my experience of them that they didn’t work very well for me and the conversations that I had on my blogs in the early days that had a more lasting impact were natural ones with real readers. Instead of going with fake comments I’d really recommend that you work on the content on your blog and writing in a way that is engaging (Read more on the topic of generating comments).

A Word of Warning – while I can see why people go with fake comments (my suspicion is that if bloggers were honest that a majority of them probably have done it) there is of course some danger in it if you’re caught. Blogging is built upon transparency and honesty. I’ve seen a handful of bloggers exposed for fake comments and it probably set their blogs back a little.

What else could you do with the time you might put into fake comments?

write an extra post a week

email another blogger in an attempt to get to know them

email a friend or family member to ask their opinion of a post you’ve written

leave a comment on someone else’s blog

think of a question to ask your readers

I’d suspect that all of these things have the potential to generate comments on your blog and build a sustainable readership for it.

Have you left fake comments on your blog? Why or Why Not? Are there times when they are OK?

This good bit is from Problogger.net, and there is a video presented Via You-Tube below this piece. The video is a quick splash of Darren Rose at work on his blog. Enjoy.

Story…

Stephanie asks Darren – “I’d like to know: As a blogger: What matters most to you?”

Wow – this could go in any number of directions including the philosophical!

I don’t think I could name one thing alone but here’s the first few things that popped into my head (I’m sure I could write a lot longer list if I were to give it extended thought):

Useful Content – as a blogger wanting to both build a successful blog as a business but who also wants to build something of value to help people I spend a lot of time asking myself how I can provide something that is useful to readers. The longer that I blog the more I am convinced that building something useful online is a key to it’s success.

Sustainable Model – as a blogger earning an income from my blogging I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t interested in the money side of things. While money isn’t everything to me and V and I do strive for a relatively simple lifestyle – it’s important that what I build has a way of both sustaining us and building an income to a level where it can also help others.

Stimulation – over the years I’ve built blogs on topic that I have limited or waning interest in. I don’t want to do this any more. I’m happy to help other bloggers with a passion for a topic build their blogs in the network I’m a part of (even if the topic isn’t of great interest to me) however life’s too short to be writing about something that doesn’t stimulate me.

Conversation – by no means am I satisfied with the level of community that currently happens on my blogs but it’s important to me that it’s growing. I’m not satisfied because I know I could contribute to it a lot more and I often feel torn between the many roles that I have as a blogger these days (here at ProBlogger alone I get 100 or so comments on an average day and to respond to them all could be a full time job in itself). My hope is to build blogs that don’t rely upon me as the only ‘expert’ but rather to build communities of expertise where the conversation is rich as a result of the knowledge that the community as a whole has.

Like I say – this is just the beginning of a longer list that I could spend a lot of time upon.

What matters to you most as a blogger?

It’s interesting to see the “weeding out” process used by search engine advertising companies, such as Yahoo Search Marketing, Google Adwords, and MSN Adcenter these days.

The days of PPC when you could just simpley out-bid your competition with a few more pennies per click are long gone. ALL of these search engines are trying to protect the quality of their search engine results, and thus have setup discriminatory and arbitrary “editorial guidelines”.    Â

These guidelines vary between Yahoo, Google and MSN (only mentioning a few here because they are the biggys), so you can’t rely on using the same strategy for writing your ads, or creating your landing page content.

Yahoo is the toughest these days becuase they have actual people reviewing the ads you place, and approving or disapproving your ad on their editorial guidelines. The truth is that it’s completely subjective. We’ve ran tests where we simply re-submitted the same ad that linked to the exactly the same page content, and they were approved by some “editors” and disapproved by others. We’ve even tried just changing the color theme of the landing page to get the ads approved.

The bidding war is a thing of the past as well. I’m sure there are some major companies with deep pockets who are pissed right off due to the new “rules”. Now, if your ad is deemed “better” by the Yahoo Sponsered Search system you will be placed ABOVE a competing ad that is actually paying much more per click. Now the same game is being played on the natural search results.

This forces businesses to out-smart and out-work the savvy webmasters that know how to build a search engine friendly site and domain. This narrator believes this new style of PPC to be ridiculous – the whole point of pay-per-click is to give the companies with real products to sell a place to advertise. Now these “real companies” can have their ad placed below some 14 year old kid that has a busy blog.

I believe this will result in a weaker Internet and a dwindling PPC business, but we’ll just have to see won’t we.

Well my wife and I broke down and bought a 10 week old golden retriever. He’s a curious little guy and he is going to be massive when full grown. He was the biggest boy in his litter.

Of course with a last name like Zulit, we had to give him a different first name. I know this is cheesy, but we have decided to call him Google.

So there you have it – I’m sure this has been over-done in the last few years, but Google is easy to say and he is responding to the name.

So…..we present to you Google! The Golden Retriever. I notice he likes chewing on our laptop cords. This could be a problem…..

Well, just like the search engine, Google is going to be a challenge to deal with, but worth it in the end.

Terry

PS – sorry for the last lame post but I needed to throw that spider bait for the world. I suggest doing the same. You may want to copy paste that for your sites or blogs.

Sitting here in a Costco parking lot waiting for my wife to hunt and gather some essentials, I’m tapping away at my Gateway notebook. I have seven decent wireless Interent connections to choose from. Four of them are locked out and three of them are open. Two of the locked and encrypted Interent connections are hackable and I’ve already hacked one just for fun of it. I’m using an open connection for this post, as I’m assuming the retail stores who have locked their wireless hotspots don’t want me using their ISP.

I have Bob Marley’s Legend CD playing and the air conditioning is keeping the effect of the hot July sun from over-heating me. It’s a good groove as I listen to “Stir It Up”, and contemplate today’s posting. Today, I thought I would publish a post that outlines my typical online work day.

So here goes: I don’t worry about writing posts in the morning and posting them in haste. Since my background before Internet entrepreneurship had me working night shifts, I find that I’m most on the ball between 9:00 PM and midnight. During the day I just check our PPC accounts and the commissions coming in. I check my email accounts, my favorite forums, new projects and ideas, my Google video account, my Google site map account, and of course my web site tracking software. I don’t really do much of anything until noon.

I schedule all posts for publishing between 1:00 and 2:00 AM. This way there is no pressure on me to post during the morning hours. My work is done before I wake up, and during the day I just sponge. What I mean by sponge is that I simply live life and let the natural wanderings of my mind lead me to the post I plan to publish at the end of the day. For me, this is a great way to allow a constant flow of ideas and writings.

I’m using a combination of standard typing and speech recognition software (see my post on Dragon Naturally Speaking here) Since this post is being written in a car and the Bob Marley is cranked, speech recognition is out of the question. I guess I could turn on the speech recognition mic and you would see something like this……

“This is my daily routine and I’m going to I shot the sheriff and I’m in this car and sheriff John brown using my Gateway laptop every time I plant a seed he say kill it before it grows“

……just wouldn’t work. However I would say that the lyrics to Marley’s “I Shot The Sheriff” could be slightly more interesting than your humble narrator’s on-going smatterings.

Anyway, back to the routine (or lack there of). So at about noon I have a rough idea of what I’m going to write about. It may be an autobiographical piece such as this one, or it could be a review of a product or service. When I write a review of a product or service I usually use an affiliate link in the text, which will result in commissions. I call those money posts, and I get really bored of money posts if I can’t mix things up with a free-form post such as this one……

Boy, I love Bob’s Redemption Song so much….”dees songs of freedom is all I ever have — redemption songs….dees songs of freedom.” Awesome…just changed tracks to “Don’t Rock My Boat”. Bob Marley’s music is centered around love and freedom. Can you believe that he passed away when he was only 36 years old. Correct me if I’m wrong on his age of death (use the comments link to set me straight) I can’t possibly get my head around that much great music being created from one man before the age of 36.

……I guess I could slide an affiliate link in here for buying Bob Marley’s Legend Album but that would mean having to slow down and going to get the Amazon affiliate code. Oh well – what the heck -Â buy Bob’s Marley’s Legend Album now. Don’t delay! You might be missing out on some of the most important music ever written, and you just won’t be cool without his vibe in your life. Listening to Bob will make you a better lover, friend, and general human being. Your hair will stop falling out, you’ll sleep better, your neighbors will respect you more, your debts will shrink, and your kids will all be happy and safe forever. There we go – it’s now a boring old “money post”. I would only make about $0.50 if a visitor bought the album, but I suppose if I converted 300 CDs this year I would make $150 bucks without having to lift a finger. Whatever….

So at about 1:00 PM I have a small post started, and I’m sort of rambling on a wee bit. After about 200 words, I take a break and have my daily tobacco fix. (not ganga spliffs either – I quit the ganga back in 1998 when my daughter asked me what that funny smell was in the garage) I smoke two light cigarettes over a large cup of coffee with double sugar and double cream. I usually talk to my wife about the daily business as she handles all our PPC accounts. She watches our Internet business much more closely than I do. I tell her what I’m writing that day, and we discuss what personal stuff we have to get done in the day. If we are feeling especially randy, we’ll head upstairs and peel some paint off the walls.

After I’ve had my shower and made the bed it’s usually around 1:30 PM and then I get back to work on my post or article. I’ll work to around 3:30 and then it should be all ready for proof-reading and editing. I’ll close my laptop and then my wife and I will head out for a walk, do some shopping, or maybe I’ll go play golf.

After that it’s usually dinner time and then maybe a short nap. (I’m over forty now so 40 winks is sometimes needed) Around 8 or 9 PM we’ll watch some TV. In the summer time not so much, but in the winter it’s always part of the routine. While I’m watching TV I’ll read over the article I wrote earlier in the day, and punch it up a little, fix spelling and grammer errors, and maybe add a picture to the post as well – if I can find a picture on the Internet that won’t get me into any infringment trouble. Like I said above, this is the time of the 24 hour cycle when I’m sharpest. Then I save it again. All done. I’ll generally go to bed at around 1:30 AM and I’ll click publish just before I head upstairs. I’ll visit some more with my wife and we’ll watch a little TV in our bedroom before we fall asleep. She always falls asleep before I do. I usually watch comedy material so I go to sleep with nothing heavy or dark on my mind. (Family Guy DVDs are the main event these days)

Then I usually sleep like a baby. I wake up every three hours crying

When I try to explain to people what I do for a living, they get a puzzled look on their face. Even after I try to explain it, they still have trouble fully grasping how money can be made from owning a web site (or blog) that doesn’t sell anything. I go into detail and explain Google Adsense, affiliate linking, blogs, web traffic, social bookmarking, and the blogsphere. I even show them one of my web sites or blogs, but many still don’t quite understand what I’m talking about. If you are one of those people who don’t yet understand this form of money making, click here, but in this post I’m going to comment on the advantages of blogging over jobbing.

To reference the inset picture, I’ll describe the key difference between online income via blogging, and pay check income from working a job. I look at it this way. Every morning you get up to go to work. You work hard (well…maybe you do) and when your day is done, your hours are in, and you will be paid accordingly. Just like rolling a big bolder up to the top of a hill. As soon as you leave work that same bolder begins rolling down the hill, and by the time you wake for the next work day, that bolder is waiting at the bottom of hill for you. You get to work — rolling, pushing, and sweating that big bolder back up the hill again. The process continues and you have to push every day to earn that same income.

Enter Your Internet Income

The biggest aberration you will find regarding Internet income is that it’s easy. All reputable bloggers and web site owners will tell you the truth — creating wealth online is hard work. I can attest to that. I sometimes work 16 hours a day (I have other blogs and sites besides Zulit.com). Sometimes only 2 hours a day. Sometimes not at all. The difference is that I’m FREE to work when, where, how, with who, and as hard as I please.

In the bolder analogy above I show how working a job only allows for a fixed income. With Internet streams of income it’s magnificently different. Yes, it’s also hard work, but when you push that big bolder to the top of hill — it’s stays there. That income stream just keeps coming, and that big bloody rock is dealt with. Once your bolder is firmly rested on the hill, you roll up another one. When it’s planted at the top of the hill you move on to the next. You see how you eventually end up with multiple streams of Internet income. Once each new stream is created, you have nothing more to do except create more. (you can also work at making some of your streams become floods)

As most honest Internet business people will confess, your sites or blogs can lose traffic if you don’t carry out some routine tasks such as periodic updates, inbound link creation, page refreshing, etc. All this is easily manageable if you setup an organized maintenance routine. This may sound like allot of work to maintain properly, but to give you an idea — my wife and I manage over 50 web sites and blogs with very little strain. Growing further than that will likely involve hiring staff, but for now, we love the freedom of not dealing with employees and customers. (internal customers and external customers)

As I mentioned above, creating a fluid flow of traffic to your blog or web site takes hard work. In the next installment I describe for beginners the different ways a blog receives traffic.

I remember playing at Cultus Lake as a kid. My grandparents had a spot out there way back in the old days. (early 1970′s) We went hunting for garter snakes, swimming in the lake, and of course the summer lasted about 3 years in my child’s mind.

I’ll be working in Cultus Lake next weekend (Wireless Internet connection willing), as we have a trip planned that takes us through the Chilliwack area. My brother lives in Chilliwack so a trip to Cultus was inevitable.

My wife and I have been experimenting with our Internet business locations. The picture on this post is of our community lake, where we frequently do our daily tasks. I don’t know why we didn’t think of working at the lake more often. (if you can call it work)

We’re pumped up about our trip to B.C., although I know Cultus Lake has changed, and I won’t recognize it from my youth. Also, we won’t be staying in a lake-side cabin as I did as a child. We’ll be tenting at the Sunnyside Camp Grounds for two nights, and then we’ll be tenting at the Vedder River Campground for another 3 nights. I’ve never been to any of these spots, so it will be an new experience. I’ve been told there is a great sport fishery on the Vedder River, and as per anything in British Columbia, Canada, it will be stunningly beautiful. (as long as the sun has priority in the sky that week)

I know some of my readers only come here to take the the video tutorials and read about my love of Internet income, and that posts like these may seem annoyingly off topic. You will find many articles on Zulit.com that are nothing more than diary style installments. I find that these articles can be motivating for new-comers who enjoy reading about the financial freedom I’ve acquired via blogging

Ok, where was I? For those readers who have never been to Canada, B.C., or Vancouver – Cultus lake is located 90 kilometers (55 miles) from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I would put a trip to Vancouver, and a lake such as Cultus, on your to-do-list before you leave this earth.

Well my wife and I had to hit the road again. It’s the summer, and there are too many beautiful places to visit. This junket will take us to Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. For those of you have never visited this Vancouver island jewel, I highly recommend an excursion of your own. There is alot to see and do in Victoria, so on your first trip you may not see it all. Just make sure you visit the inner harbor the first time you go. It’s one of the most magnificent locations in the world.

Sorry that this post is a little off topic, but it does tie into the theme of financial freedom. The freedom an Internet business affords you is priceless. I’m going to enjoy writing on this blog more than any other web entity that I’ve been involved with. I need this outlet to just spew off on any subject, even if it’s not directly related to Internet marketing, online income, contextual advertising, etc.

I’ve spent countless hours helping family, friends, and strangers get their small businesses online, so sometimes the whole subject gets a little dry for me. The thing about it is though….the answer to everyone’s question (how to make money online) is simple. Write good content that people actually want to read, and you will make money online.

Much like my article ROI in the KOA this one is all about the freedom you can have when you escape the life of an employee, or slavery brought on about by self employment. Don’t get me wrong. I understand that some people love their jobs, or their self employment work, and if that’s the case, they are very lucky. Most readers of this blog are in the business of web publishing, or on their way to being in the business of web publishing. Looks like I’m off course again. Maybe I will NEVER write an article that doesn’t touch on online income.

I’ve always loved writers that go off on tangents and that is what will be happening on Zulit.com. Readers who don’t want to go for the ride, can simply click away to another topic. One of my favorite writers is Hunter S. Thompson, and he is one of the kings when it comes to going off in tangents. He had some mind altering substances running through his blood, so I think that had something to do with his writing style. If you’ve never read one of his books, do yourself a favor, and pick one up. You might want to see the movie (starring Bill Murray) entitled, Where The Buffalo Roam, which is a humorous take on Hunter S. Thompson’s crazy lifestyle.

One of the kings of tangent-exploitation is the late Ronnie Corbett from the hit BBC comedy The Two Ronnies. His monologues were priceless, and sometimes painful, because he would drift so far off the main subject. Sometimes I just wanted him to hurry up and get back to finishing his initial story, but the tangent WAS the essence of his monologues. So if some readers visit this blog JUST to read about online income, my apologies are extended to you now, as I’m not likely to stick to any one theme. There is a category menu on the right sidebar, and there is always the search field at the top/right of the page, if you need to bolt at anytime.

So it’s 27 degrees Celsius (80.6 degrees Fahrenheit) in Victoria today and I’m off to Bear Mountain Golf Club with my best friend, whom I grew up with in Terrace, British Columbia. As young boys, we were serious golfers when we were off the ice. Growing up in any area of northern Canada, a young boy was destined to be strapping on some hockey skates and dreaming of an NHL hockey career. Wayne and I fit that description perfectly. Anyway, I better get my clubs ready for the day. Thanks for coming by again, and going on my little ride. I hope you enjoyed my “tangents”, and perhaps learned a little bit about Victoria, Hunter S. Thompson, or the Two Ronnies.

If you had told me ten years earlier that I would be running my business from a KOA campground, I would have told you to anaylize what’s in your morning coffee. It’s a beautiful day in this Montana KOA, as I type into my laptop, sitting on the porch of a tiny 3 man Kabin. I can hear the sound of birds chirping, children playing, and the faint rushing noise of highway 93 high above. My wife is having a shower as I start my daily blogging, and I have to say that at this very second life could not be better.

As of 11:00 AM this morning my income breakdown is as follows:

- Adsense clicks = $175.87
- Affiliate links = $75.00
- Donation links = $24.00
__________________________
Total in at 11:00 AM = $274.87

This tells me that traffic levels are higher than normal for a Friday. My guess is that I will break $600.00 in total income today. My total cost on the gross will be around $160.00 – when I add up all the hosting, domain fees, and PPC (pay-per-click) for all my sites and blogs. As Larry David would say, “Pretty, pretty, pretty good”. When you add it all up at the end of the month, I’ll gross over $20,000, with a total cost of $5,000.00 for PPC, hosting, and domains. A total net income of $15,000. I’m not a rich oil baron by any means, but for a guy with a grade 12 highschool education (barely), and basic computer skills, I would it call it amazing.

The only real investment I made in my internet business was my time. Time seems to be the hardest investment for people to make, and yet the most important investment to make. As you can see by the numbers above, the return on investment (ROI) is massive. I have a buddy who owns a construction company and his net profit is $7,000 per month. That’s great money of course, but he works 12 hours a day, and it seems like he is always at work. He’s never up for a golf game or a fishing trip. He’s never happy about the amount of time he has with his beautiful wife and three kids (very little) When I talk to him about business his eyes glaze over. He is still baffled by my ROI and the whole Internet “thing”. I’ve helped him setup a blog, but he never has enough time to post an article, let alone write one.

I’ve encouraged countless people offline and online, to begin their own Internet business of some kind. I’ve even been paid by new hopefuls to get them on their way. I would say so far that 2% of the students I have helped actually succeed. This makes me look like a pretty bad teacher and I’ve often thought I let my pupils down, but the truth is they don’t have the time. To be successful with an internet business such as a blog or web site, you need to be able to write. You need to enjoy writing, typing, learning, reading, using computers, and interacting with people digitally. I would say that the perfect mind for this business is that of a writer. Some people are natural born writers and some just learn it through choice of vocation. This is why you will see a high number of web sites founded, managed, owned, and operated by journalists. Don’t be intimidated by this fact though – there are many successful netrepreneurs who hail from very different backgrounds. (including your humble narrator)

As I sit here in this Montana KOA campground, it brings back memories of my childhood growing up in northern British Columbia. My Mother and Father were avid outdoors people and I climbed mountains, paddled canoes, played lake hockey, played golf, played tennis – the list is to large to complete in an article that is suppose to be about ROI. (those visitors who read my blogs come to expect digressions) I was a pathetic student and many years I think I was given passing grades out of sheer pity. I had no sense of time, no sense of committment, a bad sense of humor, and of course no common sense. All my teachers assumed that I was dumber than a sack of stale sunflower seeds, and the odds of my holding a job as an adult were worse than buying a lottery ticket. Only one teacher recognized a talent I had. I could write fairly imaginative lyrics and poems on the bathroom walls and my desk. He promptly failed me for the year and made sure I had his class the following. I’ll be writing a piece all about those days, but not here. My point is that I came from a background that was not technical, or academic.

What I’m getting at is; you don’t need to learn how to write if you want to have private Internet success. All you need to do is find your topic of passion and start blogging about it. If you are passionate about your point of topic, you will learn to type, learn to use a computer, and learn to write. The pay off for your persistance is financial freedom.

My favorite method of Internet income is blogging due to ROI (Return On Investment). My return on investment is the highest on my blogs because I only pay for my domain name and hosting services – which is very inexpensive. With all other online business ventures I spend thousands of dollars a month on pay-per-click and writers. A mature blog can easily make $10,000 a month, and that income is more secure than any job or any self employment venture. You don’t have to answer to anyone except yourself, and the money just keeps coming in. You’re not relying on the mercy pay-per-click companies either, which is very important. As the PPC outfits change their rules, and more competing web sites enter the fray, it will be harder and harder to net a profit using a pure PPC business model. Your best form of security online is growing large packets if high quality content. They can’t ever take that away from you, and the search engines will fall in love with your web site or blog.

Anyway, just sort of rambling today, and I will write more on all of these topics. My wife is ready to go exploring. I was just thinking about the freedom we have in our lives because of the Internet and the amazing ROI you can attain by using it to your advantage. As your humble narrator, I bid you a productive day.
