Web Hosting Company Reviews
Reviewing Web Hosting & Domain Companies Because Not All Are Created Equal….
I use various web site hosting companies in an attempt to diversify servers. Just a sort of redundancy backup in case of server down time. I’ve used Yahoo, Godaddy, Start Logic, Bluefish, Midphase, Gate, IX, and Pow-web. I have my personal favorites and I will be reviewing those companies in future posts.
It’s important that you buy hosting from a company that provides the essential services required to maintain a database, cgi, php, .htaccess mod rewrites, and dedicated server upgrades. Your hosting company should have a quality customer service program, solid servers (very little down-time), and of course low monthly fees. All of the hosting companies listed below have most all of these characteristics.
Here are some of the advertising blurbs these outfits are using for their sales and marketing - basic pitch.
StartLogic - Unlimited email accounts, eCommerce enabled, free setup, free domain, CGI, PHP, mysql, website builder enabled, Front Page 2002/2003, 99.9% uptime guarantee. $6.50/month. Click here for more info.
Midphase - 15,000 mb web storage, 500,000 mb bandwidth, free domain for life, ecommerce, 24/7 customer support, simple control panel, free web design software, $7.95/month. Click here for more info.
Gate - Free domain name registration, free setup, disk space 5 GB, data transfer 200GB, mailboxes 500, 100 mb mysql server database, symantec brightmail antiSpam, web-based control panel, 24/7 toll-free phone support, 99.99% uptime guarantee, $9.95/month. Click here for more info.
IX - total domains 6, free Domains 3, disk space 20GB, email accounts 5,000, bandwidth 300GB, sub domains 200, database 50, webmail included, $6.95/month. Click here for more info.
Powweb - Free domain name, Community forums, 24/7 customer support, host unlimited domains, 400 gig transfer per month, 20,000 mb web storage, $7.77/month. Click here for more info.

Any opinion on bluehost? Their customer service has been ‘on the spot’ as I’ve needed them and their platform made installing WordPress a snap. Also, have you gotten any significant income from referral programs offered by any hosting companies? If so, who is offering the best payout?

Never used Bluehost so I can’t offer and opinion. Heard they’re good though.
I always put links that pay on articles that are reviews. Don’t bother if I don’t have some personal experience thought.
Don’t make much at all on hosting aff commisions. Most visitors have hosting already. I make my recommendation and move on.
They all payout close to the same. You can see all their payouts in your CJ account. (I’m assuming you have one)

Good review, shame you put in PowWeb, I use them for my domain rogerkondrat.com and all they have been ever since I got out of my training wheels (see metaphor) is grief.
They are slow, blame wordpress when they migrate my site, when their ’sitetool’ won’t install the software correctly they make you reinstall over and over again.
From what I understand lots of other operators take a different approach e.g. customer service.
Terry thanks for the tips though I will look consider the other ones you mention.
Cheers

We’ve only used POWWEB on a few sites and no real problems. Speed was OK.
All hosting companies have their hiccups, and I’m fine with that as long as they have server issues on Saturdays after midnight and before 5:00 Am Sunday morning. That’s the time I would lose the least amount of cash.

Oh yeah, and if you have the option to install Wordpress manually, I would do it.
It’s easy and you can reload specific files up to your hosting server at will.
I’m not much on these Wordpress auto-install services.

Thanks for the post and content Christina,
I’ll have to actually purchase a hosting plan with your company and use it for a while.
I don’t directly promote hosting services unless I’ve used the service.
I take a look at your packages though, and do a quick review of your companies products and services. I can leave a link in the review to your site, but until I actually use your service, I’ll have to leave it at that.

Hello ,
I saw another hosting company listed on your website at http://www.zulit.com/2006/07/05/web-hosting-company-reviews/ and I’m hoping you would be open to adding additional revenue by promoting us as well.
At CHIhost.com we have been serving webmasters and online business owners who need serious support, performance and uptime for over 5 years. We feature hot selling, already well branded budget hosting plans.
I invite you to join our affiliate program. We have designed a high commission structure for affiliate partners, just like you, at $95 per sale.
Every day there are 32,000 sites going live and over 45,000 websites being registered.
This is an exciting money making opportunity knocking at your door.
At CHIhost.com we go out of our way to help our affiliates earn as much as possible.
For example, I have just set the action referral period to 120 days, this is 4 times longer than the 30 day norm.
What this means is, once a visitor from your website just comes to our website with no immediate purchase and returns anytime within the next 120 days for a purchase, you still get the commission for the sale.
Another thing we do, that no other CJ advertiser does, is when someone calls to order by phone we send them an email to confirm that order and on that page is the CJ action code that reads their cookie.
We do not want you to lose commission for the people that sign up by phone. You referred the customer, you should get credit no matter how they sign up.
We receive a lot of questions regarding what promotional tools we have for our affiliate partners. For great affiliates of the industry, like you, our dedicated affiliate management team have designed:
• Banners
• Keyword Rich Text Links
• Page Generation Tool
• Free Pre-Coded Template Site
• Dedicated Support team
• Recommended Key Words Files
• Free webhosting Content
You can track and create your links through Commission Junction.
If you are already an affiliate at CJ network, please click here to join our program.
I am your dedicated affiliate manager to support your efforts. For any questions or suggestions email affiliates@CHIhost.com
Finally I want say:
“Thank Youâ€
You know, today not enough people really appreciate their affiliates and they neglect to conduct their affairs with simple courtesy. I don’t want to be like that. I really appreciate the efforts from our affiliates.
Warmest Regards,
Laura Smith
Affiliate Team, CHIhost.com
PS. BONUS: Win a free video iPod!! All new publishers that add our text link or banner are eligible to win. Just reply back to this email with the URL to where put our link and you will be entered in our drawing.
Note: This is a one time email and needs no un-subscription. I will send you further emails, once I receive a reply from you.

[...] If you are interested in creating your own Wordpress blog I would watch some of the video tutorials (free) that show how to do so. All you will need to accomplish this correctly is; Filezilla FTP File (free), the Wordpress File (free), and your domain and hosting (price as mentioned above). I review some of my favorite domain and hosting companies here.   [...]
